Patient journey roadmap
A structured, evidence-led approach to spinal and brain care. We support you through every stage, ensuring you are fully informed and prepared.
Navigating your clinical care
Neurosurgical or complex spinal care is a journey that extends far beyond the operating theatre. A successful, long-term outcome depends on careful diagnostic preparation, conservative management reviews, and coordinated rehabilitation.
Whether you are exploring non-surgical options or preparing for an advanced procedure, this roadmap outlines what to expect at each milestone of your clinical journey under our care.
Important notice
For all non-emergency consultations, a valid referral letter from a general practitioner (GP) or other medical specialist is required by Medicare for you to receive rebates and for our team to coordinate clinical care.
Milestones of your care
Referral & Triage
Your GP or specialist sends a referral letter along with your imaging scans to our rooms. Dr Aliashkevich reviews these files to assess urgency and suitability. Urgent symptoms, such as progressive weakness or cauda equina signs, are triaged immediately.
Initial Consultation
You attend a comprehensive 45-minute assessment in our rooms or via telehealth. Dr Aliashkevich reviews your symptoms, physical function, and imaging scans, explaining the diagnosis in clear, plain language.
Clinical Planning
Together, we discuss a treatment plan. This may focus initially on conservative management (physiotherapy, targeted injections) or, if surgical criteria are met, scheduling a precise, custom-planned surgical procedure.
Surgical Preparation
If surgery is scheduled, our team coordinates hospital admissions, pre-operative anaesthetic reviews, and provides full Informed Financial Consent. You will receive detailed guidelines on preparing for hospital.
The Procedure
Your surgery is performed by Dr Aliashkevich in a leading private hospital using advanced robotic navigation and microscopic techniques. We prioritize patient safety, nerve monitoring, and tissue preservation.
Rehabilitation & Follow-Up
We coordinate closely with hospital wards and outpatient physiotherapists to support your recovery. Dr Aliashkevich conducts scheduled follow-up reviews at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 12 months to monitor your progress.
Pre-admission and hospital preparation
Preparing for surgery can feel daunting, but careful planning helps reduce anxiety and supports a faster, safer recovery.
Prior to your surgery, our clinical nurse coordinator will contact you to review your preparation, discuss medications (especially any blood thinners), and ensure your post-discharge support network is arranged.
