Falls Prevention & Balance Support

Falls represent a leading cause of traumatic spinal cord injuries, osteoporotic fractures, and cranial hematomas in older adults. Maintaining balance safety is a clinical priority.

Clinically Guided Balance Exercises

Heel-to-Toe Walking

  • Position yourself next to a supportive wall or sturdy handrail for safety.
  • Take 10 slow forward steps, placing the heel of your leading foot directly touching the toe of your supporting foot.
  • Look straight ahead rather than at your feet to encourage vestibular balance correction.

Single Leg Stance

  • Stand facing a sturdy kitchen counter. Place both hands lightly on the surface.
  • Lift one foot slightly off the floor, balancing on your single supporting leg.
  • Hold the stance for 10-15 seconds. Lower your foot and alternate to the opposite leg. Repeat 5 times daily.

Home Safety Hazard Checklist

Flooring and Rugs

  • Remove all loose throw rugs and floor mats, or secure them firmly with non-slip adhesive backing.
  • Ensure all electrical, telephone, and extension cords are moved away from walkways.
  • Immediately clear paper, clutter, and objects from corridors and stairwells.

Lighting & Bathrooms

  • Install motion-sensor nightlights in corridors leading from the bedroom to the bathroom.
  • Place non-slip suction mats inside the shower stall and on the bathroom floor.
  • Consider installing professional grab bars in the shower and adjacent to the toilet.
