Vocational Rehabilitation
Return-to-Work Plans
Returning to work is an important rehabilitation milestone. Managing this transition with a paced, clinically approved plan prevents recurrent injuries and safeguards your recovery.
Sedentary & Office Roles (e.g. Desk Work, Administration)
Timeline Expectation: Typically 2 - 4 weeks post-operatively (dependent on surgeon clearance).
Clinical Transition Rules
- Phased Hours: Begin with 2-4 hour half-days, alternating days if possible, building up to full-time hours over a 2-week period.
- Workstation Ergonomics: Complete an ergonomic audit prior to return. Ensure perfect monitor, chair, and armrest height.
- Dynamic breaks: Stand up and walk for 60 seconds every 30 minutes to reduce lumbar loading.
Light Active & Retail Roles (e.g. Standing, light walking, counter work)
Timeline Expectation: Typically 6 - 8 weeks post-operatively.
Clinical Transition Rules
- Lifting Caps: Strictly enforce a 5kg lifting limit during the first 6 weeks post-surgery.
- Avoid bending/twisting: Keep objects within close reach. Use your hips and knees to bend rather than rounding your lower back.
- Footwear: Wear supportive, well-cushioned orthopaedic shoes to mitigate floor impact stress.
Medium to Heavy Manual Labour (e.g. Construction, Nursing, Warehousing)
Timeline Expectation: Typically 12+ weeks post-operatively (subject to radiographic fusion verification).
Clinical Transition Rules
- Radiographic fusion: Do NOT return to manual lifting until Dr Aliashkevich verifies complete bone fusion on follow-up X-rays/CT scans.
- Structured physical therapy: Complete a dedicated workplace conditioning program focusing on core stabilization and functional lifting.
- Gradual weight build-up: Gradually increase lifting capacity under the supervision of your occupational physiotherapist.
