Glossary of Terms
Understanding medical terminology helps patients and carers feel active, confident, and secure in their treatment pathway. Find plain-language explanations of neurosurgical terms.
Arthroplasty (Disc Replacement)
A motion-preserving surgical procedure where a degenerated, painful intervertebral disc is removed and replaced with a high-end mechanical device. Unlike fusion, it maintains natural spinal flexibility.
Cauda Equina Syndrome
A rare, surgical emergency caused by extreme compression of the nerves at the base of the spinal cord. Symptoms include loss of bowel/bladder control, saddle numbness, and bilateral leg weakness.
Cervical Radiculopathy
Nerve root compression or irritation within the neck, leading to shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness radiating down the shoulder, arm, or fingers.
Decompression Surgery
A general term for surgical procedures (like laminectomy or microdiscectomy) that aim to relieve physical pressure on the spinal cord or exiting nerve roots.
Meningioma
A type of brain tumour that develops in the meninges—the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. They are typically slow-growing and benign.
Trigeminal Neuralgia
A chronic pain condition affecting the trigeminal nerve, causing sudden, severe, electric-shock-like facial pain. Frequently treated via microvascular decompression.
